20.1 What is "How to Adapt in a Career?"?
Why is the article's title "How to Adapt in a Career?", and not "How to Adapt in a Job?"? That is because a career consists of professional experience with more than one employment. There are many driving factors on why a professional moves on from a company to another. So, the question: How can one swiftly adapt in a new job?
20.2.1 Embracing the People
The first and foremost, the people. Acknowledge your new colleagues and have honest conversations with them. It is important that you do not undermine their seniority in the company regardless of your level of expertise in the function of your job. Be respectful to each other and be open.
20.2.2 Embracing the Business Language
This is not just any business language, it is jargons! Like it or not, a business will likely to have jargons and it is up to your effort to learn and understand them. Jargons vary in different departments, and different professionals use different jargons.
20.2.3 Setting Milestones
The purpose of setting milestones is to keep track of your progression. At the beginning of an employment, it is advisable that you set up your own learning milestones because no one will do it for you. Though there are quite a number of great companies that provide a learning structure on your first working day, it is still important for you to create your own learning milestones to keep track on your escalations and progressions.
20.2.4 Focus on Positivity
While positivity is important in living life in totality, it weighs equally important in a new job. This is due to the challenges in adapting such as new working practices, and embracing difficult people from colleagues and clients. A recommended approach on focusing positivity from the Founder is to focus on the solution. Never focus on the problem because focusing on the problem will not help you to solve it.
20.2.5 Progress with Time
Over time, any professional will adapt to the new job. The cues are you have understanding on the work practices, getting along well with colleagues, actually using the jargons in your communication, and having multiple solutions for a problem. At this point, your concern as a professional will be on the potential escalations and progressions for your career in the company.
I hope this article benefits you as much as it has benefited myself, wa la hawla wa la kuwatta ila billah. Insha'Allah, the next topic will be posted in the near future.
